Vandals have defaced war graves of Commonwealth soldiers by painting red Nazi swastikas on them at the Haifa War Cemetery in Israel.

More than 300 soldiers from the First and Second World Wars are buried there, including British personnel.

The vandalism was reported to have taken place on Thursday night and affected many of the headstones.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) said in a statement they were "dismayed" by the act of vandalism.

Some headstones were also pushed over.

Staff members are now trying to restore the site, while the CWGC has also thanked the public for their messages of support.
