All military personnel arriving in the UK from overseas must now self-isolate for 14 days.

The legislation, which came into force today, does not include troops arriving from the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.

It affects all defence personnel and activities and follows the rules outlined for the general public.

Anyone, including military personnel, arriving in the UK will also need to provide travel and contact details in the country to support contact tracing.

However, a Defence Advisory Note published on the RAF Families Federation website, outlined there are "limited exemptions" for military personnel - for example, if there is a "clear impact to critical defence activity".

It added there may be wider exemptions for military personnel, such as arriving in the UK on compassionate return or medical reasons.

The note said that the exemptions should only be applied in "exceptional" circumstances.

These could include where there is a clear impact on critical defence activity, and wider reasons for exemption, such compassionate return or medical reasons.

Defence personnel that have received exemption will need to show their letter to the Border Force.

Senior commanders and managers will consider introducing other factors to help protect public health should an individual be granted exemption, the note also said.
