Coronavirus: Reservists To Receive Extension On Government Support Schemes

Reservists returning to their day job from active duty are to be given an extension on Government support schemes introduced during the coronavirus outbreak.

As it stands, new applications for the Job Retention Scheme - which sees employees furloughed -  are due to end from next month.

However, in an announcement on Monday, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said reservists will now receive an extension, if required, when returning from a period of active duty.

Self-employed reservists who cannot access the similar self-employment scheme due to their service in 2018-19 will be able to make a claim for two grants.

Both schemes have recently been extended.

“Reservists embody the best of our nation – in our hours of need, they rise up to the challenge and leave their everyday lives behind to serve our people," Mr Sunak said.

“It is only right that we do everything we can to support them when they return to civilian life during these challenging times."

In April, the Ministry of Defence mobilised 3,000 reservists for an initial duration of six months to support the UK's response to coronavirus.

The Job Retention Scheme, which was introduced in March, will gradually decrease contributions until it ends in October 2020.

Currently, those placed on furlough receive 80% of their wage, up to £2,500 per month, from the Government - however, employers will be expected to contribute in the coming months.

More details of the changes affecting reservists are to be published next week.

Almost 9 million workers have been furloughed as part of the Job Retention Scheme.
