Craft Group Knit 6,000 Poppies For Remembrance Day Tribute

A church in Scotland has gone all out with its remembrance display this year to create a 40ft long cascade of poppies.

Inspired by the Weeping Window at the Tower of London, the Aberlady Craft Group decided to make their own version in East Lothian.

Work began in January to create more than 6,000 hand knitted and crocheted poppies for the stunning display at Aberlady Parish Church.

The words "Lest We Forget" are written out using the poppies onto the side of the church wall.

Margaret Langan-Fortune from the Aberlady Craft Group said;

"We're all crafty people, so just thought we can knit and crochet, and get everyone involved."

Despite initially starting out as a local project, poppies have been sent in from people around the world who want to make their contribution. Rev Brian Hilsley, Minister of Aberlady Parish Church has praised the international

"It's wonderful that so many people all over the country and around the world, have been attracted and inspired by the idea, and have sent poppies - we still have poppies coming in."

The poppies will remain on display at the church until November 29 but their popularity has already got the Aberlady Craft Group thinking about next year's arrangement.

All funds raised by the cascade will go to the Poppyscotland appeal.
