D-Day Veterans End Long Wait For Medals

Veterans of all three services have been recognised by France for their efforts in liberating the nation during World War Two.

The country's highest decoration, the Legion d'Honneur, was bestowed on the men at a service at Royal Marines Base Chivenor, more than 70 years after they stormed the beaches of Normandy.

The service is one of many that have taken place across the UK which began as France marked the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Veteran of the landings, George Lambert, says: "Better late than never - I'm quite thrilled about getting it."

Meanwhile, fellow veteran, John Tyler, says:

"I was 21...I wouldnt do it now!"

"I think it's a great honour really, it took a long while coming.

"It proves they still remember it, after 70-odd years, they still remember what we've done."
