Falkland Islands Flag Raised In Plymouth To Remember 1982 Conflict

The Falkland Islands flag has been raised on the Hoe in Plymouth to remember the 1982 conflict and honour those who served.

Veterans, serving military personnel and local dignitaries attended the event organised by the South Atlantic Medal Association.

The Belvedere building in Plymouth is a historic landmark in the city and home to a garden of remembrance which has a monument listing the names of all the maritime personnel who died in the Falklands War.

Chris Jones, from the South Atlantic Medal Association, helped organise the event and oversaw the unveiling of a new memorial bench.

Speaking to Forces News, he said: "I was gift-aided a cheque for £2,000 by an associate member, therefore the bench was created.

"This is very important to the people of Plymouth... because they have never had a flag flying to say this is the Falklands flag from 1982 in commemoration of the people we have lost."

This month marks 39 years since the conflict ended.
