Anyone For Golf? Veterans Gather For Fundraising Event At St Andrews

Former service personnel have gathered in Scotland to raise money for veterans through an annual golf event.

St Andrews, otherwise known as 'The Home of Golf', was the scene of the Silver Poppy competition, run by Legion Scotland.

The organisation supports thousands of people with their lives after the military.

For most on the formidable 'New Course', it is the highlight of Legion Scotland's social calendar.

Mark Davies, a member of the charity's Alford branch, said: "As soon as you arrive, you say 'oh hello!'.

"You maybe played with them five years ago, two years ago and you always get a smile and a nod."

The Chairman of the Kelso branch, Steven Patterson, said he loves the camaraderie of the day:

"I've met a couple of new friends on the course and that's what the Royal British Legion's all about."

Help for Heroes, BattleBack, Veterans First Point and Poppyscotland have also taken part.

For Poppyscotland's Head of Welfare Services, Gary Gray, the event promotes an important message.

"The shape of the forces may be changing," he said. "But the demands of today's men and women who have served in the forces aren't changing - if anything they are becoming more multiple and complex, and Poppyscotland is here for them at every turn."
