Ashes Of Liverpool War Veterans Re-Buried With Full Honours
Sailors, soldiers, airmen and Royal Marines have helped rededicate a grave of veterans in Liverpool.
The ashes of several generations of service personnel were previously scattered in a memorial garden at the former Royal British Legion (RBL) club in Speke.
They have now been reinterred with full honours and buried at Speke’s All Saints Church after the RBL club was earmarked for redevelopment following its closure and subsequent demolition.
However, the demolition did not go ahead until a fitting new home was found for the ashes to be reinterred.
Four military pallbearers carried a casket containing the ashes of 119 veterans, which has now been buried next to the war memorial in the grounds of the church.
They were escorted by sailors from HMS Eaglet and Royal Marines of RMR Merseyside, as well as reservist soldiers and RAF personnel.
Senior representatives from the Navy’s Regional HQ in the north-west, RAF Woodvale and 156 Royal Logistic Corps were in attendance, as well as the Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Merseyside, plus local politicians.
Among those remembered was Royal Marine Corporal Ben Nowak of 45 Commando, who was killed with three others in 2006 when a bomb exploded as they passed under a bridge in Iraq.
