Historic Army Squadron Granted Freedom Of East Lothian

A parade through the town of Dunbar has taken place, as the Freedom of East Lothian was granted to The Lothians and Border Yeomanry.

The day was marked by a presentation before E Squadron of the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry marched through the streets.

East Lothian Council’s Armed Forces Champion Councillor Jim Goodfellow said: "This wields the community to the Yeomanry and shows the partnership between the Armed Forces and the local community.

"[The squadron] have had a very long history. They were first formed in the 1700s by local volunteers and were represented in Napoleonic wars through to the Great War."

Represented by Major Stuart Vine, the squadron concluded their march outside Dunbar Parish Church to rededicate the War Memorial to their fallen.

The Lothians and Border Yeomanry can be traced back through over two centuries of Army history, back to the 1797 formation of the East Lothian Yeomanry Cavalry.

Members of the Armed Forces community and their families were invited to witness the present-day recognition of historic sacrifice.
