MoD To Check Buildings Safety Following Grenfell Tower Disaster

MOD Check Fire Safety Of Buildings Following Grenfell Tower Disaster

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has set up a working group to check the fire safety standards of its estate, following the Grenfell Tower fire.

It comes as police confirm that insulation and cladding used on the building failed safety standards.

Fire safety has been in the spotlight following the disaster, which claimed at least 79 lives.

The MoD say they are checking as a precaution, adding that all their buildings - including 35 high-rise blocks - meet relevant building and fire regulations and none of them have the same flammable cladding that was used on Grenfell Tower.

The task for the new working group is huge, as 50,000 homes and 125,000 single beds are used across the UK.

They'll also be focussing on non-living areas, such as stairwells and communal areas, to make sure they are also safe.
