Royal Air Force Typhoons based in Lithuania have been scrambled for the fifth time to intercept Russian aircraft off the Baltic coast.

The fighter jets, from RAF Lossiemouth's 6 Squadron, intercepted a Russian IL-78 MIDAS air-to-air refuelling aircraft that was flying over the Baltic Sea.

The RAF said it was a routine mission.

RAF personnel and aircraft are based at Šiauliai Air Base in northern Lithuania as part of NATO's Baltic Air policing mission.

The RAF is working alongside a detachment from the Spanish Air Force at the base.

The mission sees the Royal Air Force help protect the alliance's airspace in the region.
