Royal Navy ship HMS Scott has begun assisting with the search for debris from a missing Chilean military plane.

The C-130 aircraft disappeared over the South Atlantic on Monday but days later, debris believed to be from the plane, was found.

Officials said they believed all 38 people aboard the plane are dead.

HMS Scott arrived in the search area off Chile's south coast on Sunday and is now working alongside the country's military.

British Forces' South Atlantic Islands, based in the Falkland Islands, have already been helping with the search effort - sending a military liaison team and an A400M aircraft, crewed with RAF personnel and air-to-surface spotters from the Army.

Commander James Baker, HMS Scott's Commanding Officer, said: "What has happened to the Chilean C130 in the South Atlantic ocean this week is a tragedy, and my deepest sympathies go out to the families of those involved and the people of Chile.

"HMS Scott stands ready to provide assistance to the search and recovery effort."

The specialist ocean survey vessel is under the command of Chile's CNS Sargento Aldeya ship as part of a wider international search team.
