RAF's Amelia Kennedy makes case as military's next international boxing star

RAF boxer Amelia Kennedy has won bronze while representing England at the Silesian Women's Open Tournament in Poland.

The medal is another step in the right direction for Kennedy, who is staking her claim as the next military star to impact the international stage.

In the preliminary round, Kennedy beat Polish boxer Zofia Sobotowska by a unanimous decision before taking on Ukrainian Inna Statkevych in the quarter-finals.

This was a much closer contest as the judges were split, but the decision went the way of the RAF star.

Her run was ended at the semi-final stage though. Finland's Teresa Makinen proved to be too tough of an opponent but the bronze was secure and England's selectors will have taken note of the result.

Elsewhere, it was disappointment for the Army's Terri Stuart who was defeated by eventual gold medalist Poland's Aneta Rygielska in the semi-final.

It was a difficult test for Stuart, but she'd have had high hopes for another medal after winning gold at this year's Haringey Box Cup and last year's Women's Winter Box cup.

The mixed results for two of the forces' finest female boxers comes on the same weekend that Army veteran and former Olympic medallist Karriss Artingstall announced her retirement from the sport.
