From near-elimination to podium: GB's Kerenza Bryson secures world championship bronze
British Army reservist Kerenza Bryson has won bronze at the UIPM Modern Pentathlon World Championships in Guiyang, China.
Her win marks her return to the World Championship podium since she last won bronze in 2023 – as well as her first medal since she returned to international competition after she took a break after the Paris Olympics.
Bryson's place on the podium may have come as a surprise to many – not least herself – following a disappointing European championships prior to this event, as well as barely scraping through the semi-final stage by snatching the final qualifying place to the final.
She put up a strong performance in the final, where she performed well in her best events in the fencing and the laser run, to secure the bronze medal.
Hungary's Blanka Guzi took the gold while Egypt's Flarida Khalil finished just ahead of Bryson in the silver medal spot.
Bryson returned to international competition earlier this year following a short break after the Paris Olympics.
Modern Pentathlon now includes the newly established obstacle racing round, which was brought in as a replacement for the equestrian event and has proven to be a challenge for Bryson as well as many athletes.
Bryson also helped Great Britain secure a bronze in the women's team event, and leaves Guiyang with two bronze medals.
