Spain's future queen completes parachute training course as part of her military education

Spain's future queen makes history with parachute training

Spain's Princess Leonor has completed a basic parachute training course as part of her three-year military training programme, the Spanish royal household has said.

The heir to the Spanish throne qualified to perform static-line parachute jumps at the Mendez Parada Military Parachuting School at Alcantarilla air base in Murcia.

Leonor undertook several jumps, including a night jump in May, to pass the qualification – which is undertaken by personnel across Spain's armed forces.

Like her father, King Felipe VI, and grandfather, King Juan Carlos I, Leonor has undertaken military service, but she is reportedly the first of the three to earn a parachuting badge.

The 20-year-old is now at the end of her military education, which is designed to prepare her for her future role as commander-in-chief of Spain's armed forces.

In Spain, the reigning monarch is required by law to have trained with the country's army, navy and air force.
