A 'Sputnik moment'?: Hypersonic missiles and a new arms race

Global powers are pushing for hypersonic missile capability in a new arms race prompting fears of a "Sputnik moment".

US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, made the reference to the 1950s space race between Russia and the US and shared concern over China’s weapon development.

Hypersonic missiles take on a different flight path to conventional ballistic projectiles, potentially capable of evading some nations’ defences.

America, Russia and India are conducting similar tests.
