Stunning Pictures Of Royal Navy Warship Surrounded By Northern Lights

Stunning new images show a Royal Navy warship at the centre of a spectacular Northern Lights show during a patrol in the Arctic.

Portsmouth-based frigate HMS Lancaster was surrounded by the natural wonder during a two-week solo deployment to the area.

The remarkable images released by the Navy show shades of green and yellow illuminating the starry sky above HMS Lancaster.

Assistant Weapon Engineer Officer Sub Lieutenant Ollie Perry said: "I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights during my career and they sure didn't disappoint – what a display!"

HMS Lancaster's deployment to the Arctic was the second of the year, reaching the frozen expanse on a 3,000-mile round-trip through the Norwegian Sea and into the Arctic Circle.

Travelling solo into the region, the ship stopped off at the Shetland Islands on the way to top up on fuel.

After completing her Arctic patrol, the ship travelled to Belfast for a quick logistics stop before joining Royal Navy and international warships taking part in Exercise Joint Warrior – Europe's biggest military exercise – off the northwest coast of Scotland.
