Iraq's counter-terrorism service announced on Tuesday the death of three so-called Islamic State top leaders.

The men were reportedly killed in anti-IS coalition airstrikes in the Anbar province earlier in August.

The counter-terrorism agency said an operation near the western deserts of Anbar was carried out by fighter jets on 13 August.

In the attack, 10 members of the extremist group were killed and security forces arrested other five people allegedly linked to terrorism in the region.

In its latest statement, the Iraqi counter-terrorism service identified three individuals among the 10 who were killed as leadership ranking Islamic State members in the province.

The rest of the victims could not be identified.

Despite recent statements from Iraqi and US officials saying that IS had been defeated, members of the extremist group continue to carry attacks in the region.

Rural areas in Iraq, particularly those at the border with Syria, have proven difficult for Iraqi forces to control effectively.
