Two Blasts In Afghan Capital Kill 25 People

Kabul

Two suspected suicide attacks in the Afghanistan capital, Kabul, have killed 25 people with at least 45 others injured.

Two bombs were detonated in the Shash Darak region of the capital - a district which houses the Defence Ministry, Intelligence Service and NATO compound - on Monday morning.

The first attack was carried out by a suicide bomber on a motorbike.

The second attacker detonated his explosives while among a crowd of reporters who rushed to the scene of the first attack.

It is believed that he was pretending to be one of the media.

Afghan officials said a cameraman for a local TV station, as well as four police officers, were killed in the attacks.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported their chief of photography in Kabul, Shah Marai, was also among those killed.

AFP said Marai died in the second blast.

The attacks come just a week after an explosion at a voter registration centre in Kabul, in which 60 people were killed.

Security officials have warned about the risk of more attacks leading up to Afghanistan's parliamentary elections in October.

There's been no immediate claim of responsibility, but both Taliban and Islamic State group are active and have repeatedly claimed attacks in Kabul.

The Taliban, fighting to restore their version of strict Islamic law to Afghanistan, announced their usual spring offensive last week and there has been heavy fighting in several areas of the country since.
