A US soldier has been killed in action in Afghanistan.

NATO says it marks the seventh American service member to die in the country this year.

The soldier had been assigned to NATO's Resolute Support mission, which trains and assists Afghan security forces.

US General Joseph Votel, Commander, United States Central Command told reporters:

"The initial reports that I've seen is this is as a result of combat action and not a result of anything else that you have seen.

"Our thoughts go out the soldier's family and to the unit that he came from."

More than 2,000 American forces have died in Afghanistan since 2001.

Last month, the UK increased the number of its personnel in Afghanistan to more than a thousand.
