A number of Veterans UK's services are to be digitised as part of a new contract worth £300 million, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) has announced.

The 7-year contract aims to enhance the way the MOD-ran organisation delivers its services, including veterans' pensions.

Other parts of its parent organisation, MOD Defence Business Services, will also benefit from the makeover.

Veterans UK said the plans will take "several years" to be delivered after work began on Monday.

Among the changes will be an improved Veterans Portal which will include new digital platforms such as online claiming.

Pensions and compensation services will also be delivered in a "more accessible, digitally-enhanced way", Veterans UK said.

Andy Dowds, head of Veterans UK, said: “We have a brilliant opportunity to truly move our veterans' services into the digital age, providing easy access for customers and staff alike.

“We are starting from a low technological base and will move quickly through to a fully digital service.”

In the meantime, Veterans UK said all its services and payments will continue as normal.

Veterans UK provides free support for military veterans and their families, and oversees a number of compensation schemes.
