British Army peacekeepers in Cyprus have rescued puppies that were found in the island's Buffer Zone.

Eight puppies were found on Monday morning by the soldiers who handed them over to a local dog shelter.

The official Twitter account for the UK's peacekeeping mission in Cyprus shared footage of one chocolate-coloured pup being picked up by a soldier from what seemed to be the bank of a muddy stream.

"Not all heroes wear capes – some wear camouflage," the tweet said.

The pup could be heard squeaking in the video and was "soaking wet", according to the soldier.

Another tweet showed a soldier carrying one of the puppies in a blanket, with the caption: "This lucky pup will soon be ready to make someone's home a little bit more full of life!"
