Where courage landed: 82 years on, PWRR pay homage to the heroes of Salerno

Princess Wales's Royal Regiment 1st Battalion honour their forebears with an intense training session

On 9 September 1943, soldiers from the Royal Hampshire Regiment and The Queen's Royal Regiment came ashore near the port of Salerno, Italy, in a major Allied operation codenamed Operation Avalanche.

The landing formed a crucial step in securing mainland Italy, with the ultimate goal of capturing Naples and securing its major port to resupply Allied forces as they advanced towards Rome.

While the Allies won the battle of Salerno; it was fierce and costly, and more than 2,000 men lost their lives.

Eighty-two years later, BFBS Forces News joined the 1st Battalion, The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, currently deployed in Cyprus, as they remembered their forebears who made the ultimate sacrifice.
