Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, has announced that he will appoint an Armed Forces Commissioner if his party wins the next election.

The commissioner would sit outside the chain of command and represent the military and their families.

They would have the power to investigate and highlight issues affecting service personnel and the community.

Speaking to The Sun, Sir Keir said that the pledge was "personal".

His uncle served aboard HMS Antelope in the Falklands War.

The frigate was torn apart by an explosion and sank at sea.

His uncle survived, but his family spent an agonising few days waiting to hear if there was news.

He added that it was a national scandal that so many brave soldiers are living in damp, mouldy housing.

The Labour leader pledged that the position would be filled within his first year of being Prime Minister.

He hopes that Labour’s Armed Forces Commissioner "will be our first step in renewing Britain’s moral contract with our Forces."
