Commonwealth cavalry troopers shine in London for heavy kit pass off parade

A handful of Commonwealth soldiers from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment have paraded in full armour in London.

This was part of a heavy kit pass off parade as they prepare for duties as the King's Life Guard.

All of the dual-role troops passing out have completed a rigorous training course before taking up duties protecting the Royal Palaces.

After 14 weeks of initial riding training in Windsor, the soldiers moved to London for five weeks of kit riding – that's on horseback, in ceremonial dress, so helmets, plates, plumes and swords.

One of those coming from around the world to take part was Trooper Darkwa Alfred, from Ghana.

He told BFBS Forces News: "The very first time I put this on, riding, it felt heavy. Movement was a little bit restricted."

But after months of work to maintain and carry the ceremonial dress, he was one of many passing out in front of Hyde Park Barracks – ready for a new chapter in the spotlight.

"Before I joined the Army, I saw them on TV," Tpr Alfred added. "People taking videos of you and all that – it's a proud time."

Captain Theo Merchant, from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, said: "It's a long course that requires a lot of time preparing the horse, grooming, caring for the animal and also making sure your kit is up to standard.

"That often takes many, many hours."

Parading in front of their families and friends, these dual-role troops are excited for another huge step, ready to take up sentry positions at Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace.
