Queen Camilla, who is Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles, has become the first patron of the infantry regiment's association.

The Rifleman's Association encourages Riflemen to keep in touch with each other, offering a forum to stay connected with the regiment, providing friendship, support and assistance.

Formed in 2007, The Rifles is the British Army's largest infantry regiment including four regular battalions, three reserve battalions, Rifles-affiliated cadets, veterans and their families.

'Huge privilege'

Queen Camilla will serve as the figurehead of the association after becoming Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles in 2020, taking over from the late Duke of Edinburgh.

Lieutenant General Tom Copinger-Symes, Colonel Commandant The Rifles, said: "This is a huge privilege for the regiment and highlights Her Majesty's care, commitment and understanding for the wellbeing of our soldiers and their families.

"We are honoured that she has chosen to offer her patronage to all our Riflemen and their families."

The Queen has personal links to The Rifles through her late father, Major Bruce Shand.

Two Battalions of The Rifles form part of the celebrated 7th Infantry Brigade, otherwise known as the Desert Rats, a brigade in which Maj Shand served.

Queen Camilla, then Duchess, told Rifles' personnel how they have "impressed and inspired" her at the Rifles' 2021 Awards Dinner

Maj Shand was awarded the Military Cross in 1940, during the retreat to Dunkirk and again in 1942 for his efforts in the Second Battle of El Alamein in North Africa.

Queen Camilla's new role as patron will include her support of The Rifleman's Association's Always a Rifleman Programme.

It is a suicide prevention and mental wellness initiative, along with Care for Casualties, which supports families and Riflemen affected by the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns.
