Vahana: the invaluable workhorse of the Royal Navy that few have ever heard about
The Vahana, a SEA-class work boat, is a Royal Navy vessel many people have probably never heard of - but offers a huge degree of versatility to the service.
There are 35 Vahana ships in operation right across the Royal Navy, ranging in size from an 11-metre version right up to 18 metres.
The boat is a modular design, featuring a standardised hull with the ability to carry different payloads for different jobs.
Some are being used for diving operations in Portsmouth, Devonport, Clyde and Gibraltar.
Petty Officer Shane Lorimer described the twin jet engine boat as very manoeuvrable.
Three of the boats are working with HMS Prince of Wales as transport modules, and 10 others are being used for logistics.
Three more are working with HMS Scott and HMS Protector on survey duties.
One has even been elevated to the fleet – the largest at 18 metres, HMS Magpie, which is an inshore survey unit.
Eight others help with officer training at Britannia Royal Naval College.
