RIAT 2023: Thousands brave the weather to enjoy famous military air show

Watch: Thousands flocked to RIAT 2023, which this year has the central theme "the vital role of air-to-air refuelling in modern military aviation".

Strong winds and rain hit the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) show at RAF Fairford, causing many of day two's main attractions to be grounded.

Despite it being the wettest RIAT in decades, some displays did manage to continue, with around 180,000 people expected to brave the elements to visit the Gloucestershire show.

The iconic Red Arrows managed to complete their first flyover of the weekend after their original attempt on Friday was cancelled due to the bad weather

A yellow weather warning was issued for Saturday, 15 July, but weather conditions are expected to improve on Sunday.

Organisers of the show said they would be keeping an eye on the weather and put on as many displays as possible, but that the safety of pilots and the public would be its priority.

On Friday, the Prince and Princess of Wales paid a surprise visit to the RIAT where they took two of their children on a tour of a C-17 transporter aircraft – the aircraft which was used to transport the late Queen's coffin in the days ahead of her funeral last September.
