2,000 Lengths Over The Sea

Six members of staff from the Army Foundation College in Harrogate have signed up for an attempt to cross the English channel.

The relay swim to France is in aid of ABF The Soldier's Charity, the college hope the swim will help them reach their ambitious fundraising target of £100,000.

The training began in the comfort of their local pool. Its not quite the 30 miles across that their channel effort is likely to be.

That will end up being equivalent to something like 2,000 lengths but the swimmers are more concerned with the cold and jellyfish.

Channel swimmers must comply with all kinds of regulations.

They're not allowed drysuits which means no protection from the jellyfish.

Another regulation means that as each one gets in, they must first overtake the swimmer ahead of them for the crossing to count

The staff have had plenty of support poolside and were even joined for some lengths by the junior soldiers they teach.

Next they head to Jersey for some tips from the island's long distance swimming team who'll guide them out into slightly choppier waters.
