Basic Pay Increase For British Armed Forces
Basic pay for the forces will be increased by 1% from next month.
It’s one of the recommendations from the Armed Forces Pay Review Body, which the government has accepted.
Other changes include a 17% increase in core meal prices and a 1% increase in allowances.
A report by the independent Armed Forces Pay Review Body has shown dissatisfaction over the rise, however. It said:
"On our visits, there was more dissatisfaction expressed over pay levels and the one per cent increase than previously.
"Almost every group we spoke with considered the increase to be unreasonable when compared with inflation and the increases in accommodation and food charges."
"Personnel made the case that one per cent was a real-terms pay cut and that it was unfair."
An MoD spokesperson, meanwhile, said:
"We fully recognise the importance of our Armed Forces and their pay is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains fair."
"The government has accepted the independent Armed Forces’ Pay Review Body’s proposal for a one per cent increase."
It comes after the Defence Secretary announced a shake-up of Armed Forces pay across all three Services at the turn of the year.
