Campaign To Raise Funds To Replace Lost Soldier Memorial

A plinth in County Durham is finally set to have a new occupant, after remaining empty for 30 years.

It's rumoured that the statue which used to stand on top of the war memorial had it had its head knocked off with a shovel by drunken road workers, who were constructing the A1 back in the 60s.

It was then taken away to be repaired in the 1970s but never seen again.

But West Cornforth Parish Council has now lined up an acclaimed artist to provide a replacement, who's already gained plaudits for his work in the county.

Ray Lonsdale gained attention for an iconic statue of a war-weary soldier called 'Tommy', or officially, '1101'

And he's now designed a moving new figure for Tursdale's First World War memorial.

The council has saved money for four years so it can commision the piece. It's hoping to raise around £20,000 so it can be installed in time for the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, in three years' time.

If you'd like to contribute, The Cornforth Partnership charity has agreed to collect donations and can be contacted on 01740 652 000.
