Fresh Questions Over Defence Spending Pledge

New questions are being raised about Britain’s defence spending by a committee of MPs and a respected think-tank.

The Commons Defence Committee has announced an inquiry into the government’s pledge to keep meeting the NATO target of spending two per cent of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) on defence.

Meanwhile, the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has warned of “missing links” in the funding for the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR), which is expected in the coming weeks.

It comes after Penny Mordaunt, Britain's Armed Forces Minister, claimed last week that the 2015 SDSR will be less painful than the one carried out five years ago.

“I have happy news that this SDSR is not going to be like the 2010 review,” Mordaunt told the Atlantic Council think-tank.

“We are in a different position now. In the last five years, through really tough reforms, we are now no longer that basket-case.”
