New Plans To Resettle Syrian Refugees In The UK

A former cabinet minister has urged David Cameron to consider sending British troops to Syria, to create ‘safe havens’ for refugees.

Andrew Mitchell, who was International Development Secretary in the coalition government, said Britain should lead efforts to get a United Nations backed scheme.

This afternoon the Prime Minister will give details of a plan to settle thousands of Syrian refugees in Britain.

Matt Teale asked our correspondent James Hirst what Andrew Mitchell’s plan was. (above)

The Scottish National Party has warned against using the refugee crisis as ‘cover’ for British military intervention in Syria.

Its leader in Westminster, Angus Robertson, told James Hirst that the suggestion of deploying troops to create ‘safe zones’ should be considered very cautiously.
