Russian Military Plans To Hide City With Smoke Screen

Russia is planning to hide an entire town of 50,000 people in a gigantic smoke screen.
The country’s Northern Fleet said it will attempt to cover the city of Severomorsk on Russia’s arctic coast as part of a military exercise.
A spokesman for the fleet said mobile and stationary smoke-launchers will create a “blanket of smoke” to cover the city, obscuring it and the fleet’s base over the next three days.
Russian media said it was the first time the military had ever tried such an experiment.
Mobile and stationary smoke-launchers will be used to create the effect.
The government claims it will be harmless to the inhabitants of the city.
A statement from the Defence Ministry says:
"Residents are asked to remain calm: the smoke mixture is not dangerous to humans, though, it has a particular smell.”
Severomorsk is one of the largest cities in Russia's northern Murmansk region and is home to the administrative base of the Russian Northern Fleet.
The fleet is a unit of the Russian Navy responsible for the defence of north western Russia.
Established as part of the Soviet Navy in 1937, it has access to the Arctic and Atlantic oceans from bases on the Barents and Norwegian seas.
The fleet operated more than 200 submarines ranging from diesel-electric attack to nuclear-powered ballistic missile classes during the Soviet Era.
