US Commander: Kunduz Airstrike Was A Mistake

The top American commander in Afghanistan says the recent airstrike on a hospital in the northern city of Kunduz was a US mistake.

Speaking at a Senate committee meeting, General John Campbell began by making a statement about the strike on the clinic in Kunduz, operated by medical charity Medicins sans Frontieres.

General Campbell stressed that it had been a US decision, but admitted it was a mistake.

"To be clear, the decision to provide aerial fires was a U.S. decision made within the U.S. chain of command," he said.

"A hospital was mistakenly struck. We would never intentionally target a protected medical facility."

It comes after General Campbell said earlier this week that the airstrike had been requested by Afghan forces.
