Former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy said he was "honoured" to be guest of honour at the Army FA Awards which took place at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

The former player turned manager and pundit cut short his trip to Portugal to attend and hand out the awards to the winners.

Speaking to BFBS Sport, he said: "It was a pleasure!

"When I got asked to come, I was actually in Portugal and was due to fly back next Tuesday, and I've cancelled it and come back to present the awards because it was an honour to be asked."

McCarthy presented the awards to the winners including Army Women Player of the Season Lance Corporal Courtney Jones and Army Men's Player of the Season Staff Sergeant Matty Evans.

Other winners included Corporal Suzanne Adam who won Development Player of the Season and Trooper Jack Leighton who won U23 Player of the Season.

The former Ireland manager's mind was also on the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament which begins in Germany on Friday.

Despite Ireland not qualifying for this year's tournament, McCarthy told BFBS Sport that he's "looking forward" to seeing what Scotland and England can achieve in Germany.

"I'm expecting an exciting tournament of course," he said.

"I know that I can feel the wave of enthusiasm and interest building with England, because it always does.

"Seeing the flags on the cars and the flags on the windows and everything, so I'm looking forward to that," he added.

As a player, McCarthy represented the Republic of Ireland 57 times between 1984-1992, scoring two goals.

He also played for Barnsley, Manchester City, Celtic, Lyon and Millwall, making 582 appearances and scoring 24 goals.
