'It's A Special Feeling': RAF Honington Captain On 2021 Cup Win

RAF Honington captain Sergeant Mick Campbell says winning the RAF Cup for a second time is a "special feeling".

A 1-0 win over RAF Coningsby in Oxford meant the station won the trophy for the first time in four years.

Robbie Priddle scored the winning goal in the 70th minute to decide a hard-fought final.

"It was kind of a weird game," said Sgt Campbell. "I think we thought we were both going to come out and play really good football because of the 4G pitch.

"Actually, at times, it turned into a little bit of a battle.

"I think work rate, ultimately, with a little bit of quality got us the win," he added.

As Sgt Campbell explains, the win was an historic one for Honington.

"It's the second time we've won it now and it's the second time I've won it at RAF Honington," he said.

"It's a special cup for us because when we won it a couple of years ago, it was the first time in Honington's history.

"To come and win it a second time, especially after COVID-19 ruined everybody's civilian season – it's a special feeling.

"It's special because we've got a mix of players from all over Honington.

"It's really a big deal for us," he added.

The manager of the team, Flight Sergeant Warren Robinson, revealed that the team have had an incredible rise in just five weeks since the draw for the first round.

He said: "To get the cup back again to RAF Honington is absolutely superb for a small unit, as we are, when we come to play against the bigger stations.

"To have such a small pool of talented players – I'm lost for words, I really am!"

The station only submitted to take part five weeks ago and, says Flt Sgt Robinson, they didn't even have a team.

"At that stage, we never even had a team. We've had one training session throughout the five weeks.

"A knockout fixture each week, I think, has kind of helped us because that has been our training session. We've just gone from strength to strength."
