Army rugby league star Bombardier Bethan Dainton was part of the Wales women's side who found themselves on the end of a record 82-0 defeat to England.

At Headingley in Leeds, England surpassed their previous best score of 72-0 v Russia at the 2008 World Cup.

The home side went into half-time 34-0 up, and more than doubled their score in the second half.

Bdr Dainton told the BBC: "It was tough, and we always knew it would be. We turned up for 80 minutes. We need to take a step back and look at our fitness, but I couldn't be any prouder. We didn't have much hand on ball, and today we couldn't find the answers.

"Credit to England, they were fantastic. I'm sure we will come back stronger. For us, it's a learning curve. We're building. It’ll make people want to work harder."

Dainton impressed with her performances for Leeds Rhinos in the Women's Rugby League Challenge Cup earlier this year.

She has played in both codes for the British Army as well as internationally for Wales, which includes eight caps for Wales Rugby Union.

In 2023, she was awarded the captaincy of Wales Rugby League as she led the national side out against France.
