
Tributes paid to 'loyal and generous' Army Rugby League player

Tributes have poured in for Army Rugby League player Private Josateki Kautani Matasere who has died.
A soldier in the Royal Yorkshire Regiment, Pte Matasere, known to his family and friends as 'Teki', joined the British Army in March 2021 and was an important part of the Army Rugby League setup.
In a statement released on X, formally known as Twitter, chairman of Army Rugby League, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Grover, said: "It is with great sadness that the Army Rugby League announce the passing of our brother Private Josateki Kautani Matasere, 'Teki'.
"A tremendous talent and presence on the rugby field, in just two seasons he saw success with the Yorkshire Regiment, became a champion with the Infantry, represented the Army and delivered scintillating and memorable performances.
"Incredibly loyal and generous, a friend to all with a smile to brighten any day. A joy to hear him laugh, sing and celebrate. A light has gone out in the world, we shall miss him enormously.
"Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family at this tragic time. Our sincerest condolences are shared with his many, many friends and comrades."

Pte Matasere served with Alma Company, Second Battalion in Cyprus as well as in Germany on Exercise Cerberus before going on to attend the Sniper Operators Cadre in 2023.
Commanding Officer of the Second Battalion of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Mike Wade-Smith, said: "Private Matasere could light up a room and bring warmth to the coldest of exercises with his contagious smile.
"Further he could electrify a game of rugby with his fast hands and feet. An earnest and endearing young soldier with huge promise.
"Our thoughts and prayers remain with his wife, daughter, family and friends. Fortune Favours The Brave."
No further details have been given about Pte Matasere's death.
