Army rugby try-scorer reacts to Cambridge University defeat
Army Rugby Union Men's player Captain Giles Bromley-Martin said that the team is "proud" and on an "upward trajectory" despite a tough fixture against Cambridge University who beat the Army 29-21 in their friendly fixture.
The Army team scored three converted tries in the game and, at one point, they had a comfortable 12-21 lead in the second half, but that lead was short-lived as Cambridge came roaring back in the second half, scoring two tries and a penalty kick to seal the victory over the reds.
Capt Bromley-Martin said: "It was a tough fixture against a really good Cambridge side, well thought out, but we can't really fault the lads for putting in an absolute shift, they worked throughout.
"But we are a new group together and I am sure as the matches go on, we will get better and better as a group."
The light blues proved to be a real test for the Army as the team look to up their level of play in anticipation of the season ahead, and Capt Bromley-Martin says he is "proud" of how the team reacted to a well-drilled Cambridge side.
He added: "I mean you could see it, things like their maul, their set play was well drilled, they could get through the phases well and they did challenge us.
"They took us wide, they took us narrow, and really challenged our defence, but what I think we are proud of is how we reacted to that.
"Yes, we didn't get a win, but we got off the line, we made our tackles and it was a good performance despite the loss."
The Army look to use up-and-coming fixtures to prepare for the Inter Services, where the Army will play the RAF on 15 April before they face the Navy at Twickenham on 13 May.
Capt Bromley-Martin said: "It is always a challenge, we have played the senior side every year and they are always competitive.
"But I think our challenge is down the road, it is the Inter Services, and although it is a speed bump, we are on an upward trajectory towards the finish line, so we will get to where they are, just give us time."
