Navy under-23s continue Inter Services preparations against University of Portsmouth
The Royal Navy under-23s have beaten the University of Portsmouth 33-10 after a lively clash at the United Services Sports Ground as they continue their preparations for the U23s Inter Services championships.
In a game that saw both sides clash with physical intensity and brilliant tactical play, it was the Navy who emerged victorious with George Edson being the standout player after converting all three of the first-half tries and also crossing the line himself in the second half.
The Navy made their mark early with a try by Alex Einchcomb, and Rhys Owen capitalised soon after to break through the students' defence to dot down another try.
Exerting a show of strength, Epeli Tabaka powered over to complete a dominant first half with Edson's conversions remaining on point.
The Navy did concede one try to the students before the break, as the away bagged a well-executed try to close the gap to 21-5 at half-time.
In the second half, Edson continued his great performance to score a converted try to help the Navy remain in control of the game.
However, the students slipped through the Navy's defence again with another well-executed try, bringing the score to 33-10.
But as the game reached its climax, the Navy U23s were unflappable despite against a gritty and determined student side which kept a lively crowd of students and sailors entertained from start to finish.
Speaking to Navy Rugby, head coach Ben Priddey said he was "very happy" with the team's performance in Portsmouth, crucial ahead of Inter Services team selection.
He said: "Very happy, we got to look at 30-plus players which is huge leading up to the Inter Services.
"Portsmouth [University] were a physical side and the lads stepped up.
"We need to use this now to keep building and work on the areas that didn't go well."
Navy U23s Assistant Director of Rugby Matt Bowden added: "You could tell they are starting to gel which was evident in some really good long-range tries.
"We looked dangerous from all areas of the field, and this is pleasing to see in only our second game of the season.
"There are some really tough opponents coming up as we make the approach to the Inter Services, but last night's performance has laid down a marker for what we are capable of."
Elsewhere, the Royal Navy women's development squad beat Millbrook Rugby Club 24-17 on Wednesday night after they came back from five points behind at half-time.
