Former British Army soldier Corie Mapp has won gold at the IBSF Para Bobsleigh World Championships in St Moritz, Switzerland.

Mapp came into Friday's event leading the field after he laid down the two fastest times in Thursday's first two heats.

He then clocked the fourth fastest times in both the third and fourth heats, which were enough to secure the world title with a combined time of 04:54.03.

Home favourite Jonas Frei of Switzerland won silver and Austria's Hermann Ellmauer won the bronze medal.

World championship gold had eluded Mapp in previous years, including last year when he was forced to settle for bronze in Lillehammer.

Mapp secured his third-ever World Cup crown in Sigulda two weeks ago.

Speaking to BFBS Sport, Mapp said: "I feel amazing, I feel so happy and so proud to have been able to achieve this goal.

"It's something we had set out over the last three years and it's nice that we were finally able to achieve that goal."
