HMS Mersey is being repainted and will soon be wearing a more colourful and distinctive coat, similar to the patterns once used to hide ships from submarines.

Currently docked whilst the work takes place, the Royal Navy's River-class offshore patrol vessel is being decorated by workers from BAE Systems and the A & P Group.

Her new exterior will be decorated with the 'Western Approaches' paint scheme, which was used during the Second World War to hide vessels from submarines.

A similar concept was used for ships that became known as 'dazzle boats' which were used during the First World War.

Named after the River Mersey, the vessel will be coloured with shades of green and blue above the surface.

Her new design will be similar to that of HMS Tyne and Severn which have both been repainted already.

On social media, HMS Mersey joked that she had felt left out since her counterparts had a new coat of paint.

Watch: HMS Mersey has the 'Eurovision buzz' in Liverpool.

This is not the first time HMS Mersey's colours have drawn attention.

During Eurovision in 2023, HMS Mersey was adorned in the Ukrainian colours of blue and yellow during the event.

She later welcomed 80 members of Liverpool's Ukrainian community on board for a tea party.
