Watch: World's first F-35 night-time shipborne rolling vertical landing made on HMS Prince of Wales

Watch: F-35 night-time completes world's first SRVL night landing on HMS Prince of Wales.

An F-35 has made history with a special night-time landing on HMS Prince of Wales.

The American jet completed the world's first shipborne rolling vertical landing (SRVL) at night on the Royal Navy aircraft carrier during training off the east coast of the United States.

The ship made the announcement on its official account on X, formerly Twitter, saying: "#WorldFirst."

A rolling landing allows F-35 pilots to land on board the aircraft carrier with heavier loads, meaning they don't need to jettison fuel or weapons before landing.

The method sees the jets make a more conventional landing approach, closer to what would be seen on land.

Pilots approach the ship from behind at speed, before using thrust from the aircraft's nozzle and lift created by air over the wings to touch down and gently come to a stop.

HMS Prince of Wales shared footage of the first F-35 night-time SRVLs on X.

F-35 jets typically land on the aircraft carrier vertically, hovering by the side of the ship before moving sideways and lowering onto the flight deck.

The first SRVL on HMS Prince of Wales was made earlier this month.

The landings come as the £3bn aircraft carrier continues its long-awaited trials with F-35s as part of her Westlant 23 deployment.

F-35 aircraft have also been carrying out cross-axial approaches and landings on HMS Prince of Wales – a technique used during crosswinds.

The American jets have also been conducting aft-facing landings and vertical take-offs, meaning the jets can take to the skies without needing to use the carrier's ski jump.

The crew of HMS Prince of Wales also posted on X about welcoming on board a special guest from the US-based charity Mutts with a Mission.

A yellow Labrador retriever therapy dog called Ike, who is an honorary US Navy lieutenant commander, was welcomed aboard and given a tour of the vessel by the crew.

Ike was captured sporting some special canine goggles as he made his way across HMS Prince of Wales' flight deck.

Mutts with a Mission is an organisation that provides therapy dogs for former service personnel.

HMS Prince of Wales, which is set to return to the UK by Christmas, has also carried out Replenishment at Sea (RAS) with two US vessels as it continues its Westlant 23 deployment.
