Shahed: The one-way attack drone so effective that the US had to have one too

Shahed: Made in Iran, copied in Russia – and now copied in US

The US Navy has been testing a one-way attack drone – and if you've been following the war in Ukraine, you'll recognise an airframe that has come to define drone warfare.

America's homegrown, low-cost unmanned combat attack system, or Lucas for short, has been launched from the flight deck of the USS Santa Barbara, an Independence-class littoral combat ship.

The drone, which is made by Arizona-based SpektreWorks, is based on the Russian Shahed 136, which itself is modelled on an Iranian design.
