Shattered streets to wounded soldiers: PM sees human cost of Ukraine's war firsthand

Rubble and wreckage from a strike at Lukanivska market in Kyiv showed Andy Burnham the destruction left by Russia's continuing attacks during his first foreign trip as Prime Minister.

At Lukanivska metro station, Mr Burnham inspected boarded-up windows and other damage caused by strikes as he visited Kyiv to mark Ukraine's Independence Day and reaffirm Britain’s support.

And at Mykhailivska Square, the Prime Minister paused and laid flowers at the Wall of Remembrance, which commemorates Ukrainians who have lost their lives during the war.

Destroyed Russian military vehicles on display nearby offered a stark reminder of the fighting, with Mr Burnham examining the wreckage of equipment used by Moscow's forces.

At the Main Military Hospital, the PM met patients wounded in the conflict and saw the work of the David Nott Foundation, a UK-based charity which has trained more than 1,000 Ukrainian surgeons, anaesthetists and other healthcare workers.
