Members of the British Armed Forces have taken part in a service of remembrance for the 2,403 service members and civilians who died in Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 2023 marks the 82nd anniversary of the Imperial Japanese Navy's attack on the American fleet in Hawaii on 7 December 1941.

The service was held at the USS Arizona Memoria in Honolulu.

The UK Military and Defence Staff US wrote online: "On Pearl Harbor Day, British Defence Staff were honoured to join former British Army members in Hawaii for a special service of Remembrance."

"The USS Arizona remains as a monument to the events of WWII, and to the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

"This year's theme was 'Legacy of Hope', a reminder for everyone to not just embrace victory, but the 'expression of hope for the realisation of lasting peace'."

A moment of silence was held at 07:55 during the event where people from the United Kingdom and the United States stood side-by-side to remember those who lost their lives that day.

In a show of respect, a wreath was laid by The Chelsea Pensioners.

Also in attendance was the Royal Navy attaché to the US armed forces, Lieutenant Colonel Matt Witko, and Captain Chris Dyke, who met veterans and current service personnel alongside the Chelsea Pensioners.

The wreck of the USS Arizona still lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor beneath the memorial, testament to one of the most pivotal moments in US history which led to the entry of the United States into the Second World War.
