Remembering The UK Rail Crash Which Killed 200 Soldiers

Schoolchildren from Edinburgh have helped to create a living memorial to remember those killed in the UK's largest ever rail crash.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Quintinshill rail disaster, in which more than 200 soldiers on their way to fight in the First World War were killed.

The majority of those killed when five trains collided near Gretna Green were Territorial soldiers from the 1/7th (Leith) Battalion, the Royal Scots heading for Gallipoli.

A true figure for the number of dead has never been ascertained with the Regimental roll call lost in the ensuing fire.
