Concerns Over Deadly Bacteria Found In Windsor Barracks' Showers

Legionnaire's Disease Bacteria suspected in showers at Windsor barracks

Heightened levels of the bacteria that can cause the deadly Legionnaire's disease has been found at Victoria Barracks in Windsor during a routine inspection.

An MOD spokesperson has confirmed that a block of 60 showers has been closed as "a precautionary measure".

They added that they are working with contractors to resolve the issue as soon as possible:

“Only one block of showers is closed and nearby alternatives are available while we fix the problem.”

An initial treatment of the water system has been carried out and the results of tests are being awaited before the showers can be brought back into use.

Soldiers at the barracks - including the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, part of the Queen's personal troops - have to use alternative facilities while work is completed.

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious lung infection caused by Legionella bacteria, and it is very rare in the UK.

The bacteria thrives in water droplets and is normally found in sources of water, such as ponds, rivers and lakes. However, it can rapidly multiply if it finds a way into artificial water supply systems.

The disease can cause pneumonia, chest pains, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting and can kill if not treated with antibiotics.
