Iraq and Iran Sign Defence Agreement

Iran and Iraq have signed an agreement to boost military cooperation between the two nations.

The agreement was made by Iranian defence minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan and Iraq's minister for defence Major General Erfan al-Hiyali.

It was signed in the Iranian capital, Tehran, after Brig Gen Dehqan invited his Iraqi counterpart.

The partnership will work across a variety of fields, including fighting terrorism.

Relations between the two countries have improved over recent years since the removal of Saddam Hussein from power in 2003.

The US President Donald Trump has been critical of what he calls "rogue regimes", in which he included "North Korea, Iran and Syria and the governments that finance and support them".

Maj Gen al-Hiyali will now visit other Iranian defence officials during the remainder of the trip.
